Our second harvest yielded a wine of a beautiful, elegant nature that summoned the spirit of its original owner, Simone or "Sim" as she was affectionately known to the family. We harvested two of our favorite varietals from the estate vineyard in early October: Grenache and Mourvèdre, and chose to co-ferment them, interspersing whole cluster Grenache with destemmed Mourvèdre in a stainless steel fermenter. The result is an incredibly juicy, yet refined expression of the red fruit-driven Grenache, with the refreshing acidity of Mourvèdre. With intense garrigue aromas on the nose - think fields of lavender, thyme and rosemary - and a wonderfully juicy palate of brambly fruits like strawberries and blackberries, candied violets, crushed gravel, bergamot peel and baking spices such as cardamom and cinnamon. Welcoming notes of sucre file, ripe red raspberries and salted licorice billow from the glass, only to be accentuated by mouth-coating tannins and punctuated with a fresh palate-pleasing finish.

Zesty and spicy, with appealing raspberry, dried cherry and smoky cinnamon flavors that persist toward fine-grained tannins. Grenache and Mourvèdre. Drink now through 2024. 445 cases made.

Lastly, the 2016 Simone is also outstanding and has loads of character. A blend of 52% Grenache and 48% Mourvèdre brought up in 30% new barrels, its offers terrific blueberry-like fruits as well as notes of spiced meats, ground pepper, and leafy herbs. Medium to full-bodied, concentrated, and balanced, it will be even better with a handful of years of bottle age and I suspect drink beautifully through 2026.

The 2016 Simone is a blend of 52% Grenache and 48% Mourvèdre made in a pleasantly rustic style, reminiscent of an Italian variety with notes of Earl Grey tea leaves, dark cherries, blood orange peel and Angostura bitters. The palate is medium-bodied with intense, bitters-laced fruits, a pleasantly rustic frame and a juicy pop of freshness on the spicy finish. 445 cases were produced.
