A warm and pleasantly balanced wine which combines potency and elegance. Deep ruby red, tending toward garnet and with age, towards orange, it presents scents of ripe red berries on the nose, with liquorice and leather with velvety tannins on the palate. Serve with well -structured, important dishes, such as red and braised meats, game and mature cheeses.

The 2017 Brunello di Montalcino is intense, evolving in the glass, as smoky crushed stone gives way to balsamic spices, dried black cherries and hints of mint. It boasts creamy textural red and black fruits with a cocoa tinge. Balance is expertly maintained by brisk acids and underpinnings of sour citrus. The 2017 finishes savory and structured, yet its tannins are rounded, making for a classically dry finale with nuances of salted licorice that linger long. La Colombina found a wonderful balance from such a difficult year. Bravo!

With the Castelnuovo dell'Abate subzone mentioned on the front label, the La Colombina 2017 Brunello di Montalcino shows a flavor profile that ties into the added intensity and dark fruit associated with this warmer side of the appellation. The wine shows power and textural richness; however, it never feels too ripe or heavy. Instead, it offers a rather subdued interpretation of the vintage without pushing the boundaries in any particular direction. The tannins are dry and stemmy at this young stage. Production is 16,000 bottles.

Aromas of violet, scorched earth and cedar lead the nose. The solid palate offers blackberry jam, licorice and toasted hazelnut alongside firm tannins. Drink 2023-2029.
