Planted in 1896, Nervo Ranch sits on 25-35-degree slopes of shale just south of the town of Geyserville. Always one of the most elegant and delineated of the Heritage wines, Nervo is one of the best wines we made from the 2019 vintage. A blend of the three old blocks on the ranch, this is a field-blend of Zinfandel, Negrette (Pinot St. George), Petite Sirah, Alicante, Grenache, Trousseau and more. Pepper and violet-tinged perfume hovers over a core of dense fruit that increases in volume with air. If Lorenzo's, just over the ridge to the east less than a mile away, is a classic "New World" razzle-dazzle of volumetrically amplified fruit, Nervo is distinctly more "Old World" in vein, reminding us more of genteel Gigondas or Priorat in its weighting.

A powerful, explosive wine, the 2019 Nervo Heritage Wine possesses tremendous energy right out of the gate. Crushed flowers, mint and spice lend striking aromatic nuance. The tannins are a big edgy at the moment, but time in bottle should take care of that. I imagine the 2019 will be positively stellar with a bit of bottle age. (Drink between 2026-2039)

The 2019 Nervo Ranch Heritage is an Alexander Valley release, and the vines here were planted in the late 1890s on a 30-degree slope of shale just outside the town of Geyserville. Lots of spice, herbes de Provence, mulled cherries, and licorice notes all emerge from this beauty, and it's medium-bodied, with a lively, elegant texture, present tannins, and a good finish.

This red is rustic and briary, yet packed with personality, offering notes of currant. green peppercorn, and orange-tinged bitter chocolate. Hands off for now. Best from 2022 through 2030. 200 cases made.
