The 2018 Montefalco Sagrantino Collepiano shows that special Caprai touch that evokes softness and texture without going overboard. Striking that balance is incredibly difficult with a grape like Sagrantino that comes bursting out of the gate with power and often astringency. This wine is alive and fruity with a 15.5% alcohol content that is woven into its rich mouthfeel. Production is 70,000 bottles.

A compact, full-bodied red, with a fragrant thread of anise hyssop and tar-tinged smoke wafting through blackberry, black currant, sandalwood and espresso crema. Fresh and focused, with firm tannins enmeshed with the rich flavor profile, which lingers on the spiced finish. Best from 2025 through 2033. 4,150 cases made, 450 cases imported.

The 2018 Montefalco Sagrantino Collepiano takes its time opening in the glass, at first floral with a hint of red currants. Coaxing releases pretty notions of rose water, cinnamon and black cherries. It's incredibly soft and round on the palate, also more finessed than expected, with pretty wild berry fruits and mineral underpinnings offset by a pleasant inner sweetness. A mix of plum and inner violet florals lingers, as the 2018 finishes lightly tannic yet fresh. The 2018 is a more accessible vintage for Collepiano, which will provide plenty of pleasure with only minimal cellaring.
