The 2018 Chardonnay Perle was mostly (92%) aged in used French barriques (18% new) for eight months, the rest in stainless steel. It comes in at 13.5% alcohol. This was sourced from vines variously planted in 1988, 1993 and 1994. This has been a sturdy and reliable Chardonnay over the years. This year's version feels a bit slight in the mid-palate, though. It controls the wood reasonably well, showing some hazelnut nuances but also some freshness. It never seems terribly concentrated or precise, though, and the finish is just average. Overall, in a tough year, it still does nicely. I'd drink this on the younger side this year for best results, although they do tend to age well.
