Viscous and beautiful, the Spätlese from the Weil estate site, Kiedrich Gräfenberg, is unmistakable as a great example of one of the Rheingau's top terroir. 2022 was a hot vintage for the Rheingau, with record-high temperatures and very little precipitation. The old vines were resilient, producing profound wines. Rich, honeyed aromas of ginger, richly ripe peach flesh and lemon curd balance with spices and orange blossom flowers. The palate is stunning, with a gorgeous balance of ripe richness and acid-driven elegance. Ripe, honeyed peaches, candied ginger, and a touch of just squeezed lime lift the fruit towards a finely etched acidity.
The 2022 Kiedrich Gräfenberg Riesling Spätlese is clear, fine, fresh and iodine-inflected on the nose that is precise and complex, even with more phyllite (and tea) notes than the rich (but dry) GG. However, the palate is really rich in terms of texture, but it is firmly structured and nicely drying on the saline, savory, oh-so-tensioned finish. This is a superb Spätlese with great aging potential. 9% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in August 2023.
