Aged 20 months in 100% French oak, with 48% in 600l puncheons and 52% in 225l barrels (25% new, 75% seasoned French oak), this Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced from 31% Fortuna Vineyard and 69% Leopoldina Vineyard in Oakville. While it shares the same structure and aromatic complexity as the Reserve, the 2022 Oakville Cabernet presents darker, more lush fruit, with a juicier, black-fruited profile rather than the red-toned brightness of the Reserve. Fragrant cedarwood, walnut, and green tobacco still define the nose, but the tannins here are notably more approachable, making for a rounder, silkier expression. A more immediately expressive and supple Oakville Cabernet, layered with depth and richness, still carries the structure for mid-term ageing.
The 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Black Label is packed with inky dark fruit, espresso, licorice, lavender and a kiss of French oak. This opulent, dense Cabernet Sauvignon packs a pretty hefty punch. Ripe, plush tannins wrap it all together in style. Blackberry jam, cloves, new leather and crème de cassis linger. This is one of the more opulent, extroverted wines in the range.
A selection of the winery's best lots, normally from the Leopoldina and Fortuna Vineyards, Turnbull's 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Black Label offers up seductive scents of ripe black cherries, powdered sugar, loam and mocha. It's full-bodied, soft and expansive in the mouth, but it doesn't have the structure and textural richness of the last four years or so, finishing long and mouthwatering. It's still an excellent wine but perhaps one to drink on the younger side.
