Aromas of raspberries, lemons and fresh flowers follow through to a full-bodied yet very tight and linear palate with focus and intensity. Very long and beautiful. My favorite contrada this year. Drink in 2020.
The 2016 Etna Rosso Santo Spirito (98% Nerello Mascalese and 2% Nerello Cappuccio) shows a slightly more open and accessible style with purple fruit, wild berry, spice and grilled herb. You feel the warmth of the vintage and the even ripeness of the fruit. Yet, make no mistake, the wine is profoundly Burgundian in character, with delicate traces of dark mineral and ash woven throughout the wine's fine texture. The wine is graceful and almost fragile in disposition. Some 7,000 bottles were made.
Aromas of dark spice, menthol, wild berry and French oak slowly appear in the glass. The taut, linear palate evokes cranberry, raw strawberry, star anise and blood orange set against vibrant acidity and tight, fine-grained tannins that need a few more years to unwind. Drink 2021–2026. Kerin O’Keefe
