Elegance is the throughline of Talley Vineyards' winemaker Eric Johnson and his formidable wines. The Rosemary's Pinot Noir is sourced from a select site, the coolest on the estate. Winemaker Eric Johnson attributes its special wines to a combination of conditions: the temperatures, thicker skins and the site's shaly loam soils. This wine has a duskier side but is still so lifted and elegant—aromas of smoky violets, dried orange peels and a petrichor mineral tone. The palate is lush but bright, balancing the darker elements of the thicker-skinned Pinot Noir with the expected elegance and freshness of the wines from Talley Vineyards. Flavours of tart blackberries and mint, white peppercorn and a savoury black tea element deliver this wine to its gorgeous finish.
The 2022 Pinot Noir Rosemary's Vineyard is a deep, beguiling wine. Black cherry, clove, tobacco, dried herbs and lavender add to an impression of somber intensity. This dark, brooding Pinot has plenty to offer. I especially admire its textural density and overall persistence.
The 2022 Pinot Noir Rosemary's Vineyard is the most aromatically developed Pinot Noir of the range, showing vibrant, polished red fruit aromas framed with judicious new oak and lifted top notes of dried herbs. Similarly, the texture is a beautiful combination of alluring, tensile and agile, displaying solid precision and clarity through the medium-bodied palate. The finish is direct and structured, showing a framing of chewy, new-oak tannin that could use a year or so to integrate.
