2021 was a warm vintage, often referred to as a new classic, and this single-vineyard wine from Temperance Hill in the Eola-Amity Hills delivers the good, classic style and conveys undeniable Temperance Hill character. Coming from two separate blocks on the organically farmed estate, the East Block, planted in 1984 and the R Block, which faces south. It spends 16 months in a predominance of neutral French oak. On the nose, wild bramble fruits make way for ocean air and elegant flourishes of mint and pine bough. The palate is taut, with lovely, juicy red berries, salty minerality and wonderfully elegant forest underbrush, finishing with soaring minerality and a stunning acidity that will serve this very ageable wine well over the next decade.
The 2021 Pinot Noir Temperance Hill Vineyard in youthfully coiled, slowly evolving with scant black cherries, grilled herbs and a tinge of crushed stone. This is racy and sleek with lean red berry fruits and tactile mineral tones, all guided by brisk acidity. It leaves a flowery concentration that coats the palate as gently grippy tannins resonate on. Patience will be required.
