The Fratelli Serio & Battista Borgogno 2021 Barolo Cannubi shows an equal dose of dark fruit, blackcurrant and oak spice that is backed by campfire ash, spent ember and crushed rose. This is a powerful Barolo with a light appearance that pushes from the back with firm tannins. Winemaking sees 30 days of maceration in oak and 31 months of aging in oak. This is a release of 17,000 bottles, with fruit selected from across three hectares.
The 2021 Barolo Cannubi captures all the classicism of this site in its delineated aromatics, silky tannins and mid-weight structure. Gracious and light on its feet, the 2021 is charming and easy to like. That said, I did expect a bit more, given the pedigree of the year. Sweet dried cherry, dried herbs, cedar and pipe tobacco lift the mid-palate and finish.
