Another iteration of Sta. Rita Hills old vine Chardonnay, the 2017 Sanford & Benedict from Racines is a dynamic wine built for the cellar. The nose gives off aromas of lime zest, acacia and breakfast cereal. The palate is texturally expansive and oceanic in nature, finishing with a vibrant, crunchy structure that will take a couple of years to come into itself. I find the Racines wines noticeably more reticent than the Tyler lineup at this early stage, and am excited to follow their progression in the bottle.
The 2017 Chardonnay Sanford & Benedict Vineyard has a youthfully shy nose, slowly opening to red apples, ripe white stone fruits, lemon cream and lime peel with notes of pastry and petrichor. The palate is light to medium-bodied, saline and precise, with tangy acidity and a pleasant touch of texture on the long, mineral-driven finish.
