This Pinot Noir is sourced from the upper blocks of La Rinconada Vineyard, adjacent to the historic Sanford & Benedict site, where deep, dark, and rocky soils shape the character of the fruit. Sourced from Mt. Eden cuttings originally brought south by Richard Sanford, this cuvée shows more depth of colour and greater aromatic intensity than the winery’s Sta. Rita Hills and Sainte Rose bottlings, making it an excellent candidate for cellaring. The nose is clean and red-fruited, accented by notes of white pepper and purple sage. On the palate, vibrant red strawberry and cool violet salal berry fruit are layered with green olive nuances and pronounced mineral tension. Its extended growing season and saline energy speak to its cool-climate origins — a wine of precision and structure, with echoes of Volnay in Burgundy.
The 2022 Pinot Noir La Rinconada Vineyard is one of the best 2022 Pinots I tasted for this report. Bright and explosive, with tons of energy, the 2022 pulses with energy. I admire its vibrancy and persistence. Dark red/purplish fruit, spice, cedar, herbs, crushed rocks tobacco and a kiss of French oak are all dialed up. Clean mineral notes support the effortless finish. This expressive Pinot has it all.
The 2022 Pinot Noir La Rinconada Vineyard opens with a primary bouquet of candied cherries, blueberries and bergamot. The palate delivers the lovely balance of vibrant lift and refined depth characteristic of La Rinconada, concluding with a weightlessly grippy finish that lingers with a distinctly oceanic quality. While this may seem somewhat stunted compared to more forgiving harvests, it is an impressive showing nonetheless.
