Darkly floral and intense, the 2021 Nobile di Montepulciano Asinone smolders up with an array of crushed blackberries and cherries, all complicated by a whiff of ashen stones. Hints of sage add a lovely lift. Cool-toned and sleek, this washes across the palate with an energetic blend of tart wild berries and complementary violet floral tones. Grippy and pleasantly chewy, the 2021 tapers off with edgy tannins and a tinge of residual acidity that keeps the mouth watering for more. I'm loving the lively nature here. Poliziano has been drastically reducing its use of barriques in favor of tonneaux and large casks, and it really shows here.
Made since 1983, Poliziano’s iconic bottling hails from a 12-hectare expanse on marine-origin blue clay. It brings together 60- and 30-year-old plantings matured entirely in French oak tonneaux, 50% new. Fresh, youthful blackberries and black currants pop on the nose, joined by sweet, wafting Mediterranean herbs, smoke and nutmeg. Round and generously packed, the palate reveals concentrated blueberry and dark cherry compote interlaced with cocoa and cedar bark. The tannins are velvety and polished, cinching in the full figure. Juicy Sangiovese tanginess performs its refreshing magic. As yields were down 20% in 2021, fewer than 20,000 bottles were produced.
