Michael Schmelzer crafts two annata. Sangió comes from a vineyard purchased in 2018 which he is converting to organic. It sits above Panzano – between 400 and 550 metres – on shale and calcareous sandstone. While dense and compact, it expresses cool tones of red fruit and pleasantly bitter blood orange as it opens up. The tannins are chalky in texture and firm, amplified by citrussy acidity. It takes its time to unfold, so give it a few more months in the bottle.
