The 2017 Riesling HJW Bio is a relatively new brand that is sourced from the HJW Vineyard's "block four," which contains 2009 vines that are farmed "biodynamically." It was partly (20%) aged in 1,000-liter Hungarian wood, unlike the 2016, which was fully oak-aged. It comes in with seven grams of sugar and 12% alcohol. Beautifully textured, this is as focused as the regular HJW but not as expressive of the grape yet. I'm not sure it ever will be, but it has a chance to develop well, and it is pretty interesting even now. This is a bit backwards—it needs a little cellar time, a couple of years at least. There were 450 cases produced from varying harvest dates, with about two-thirds late picked and one-third early picked.
