Wildflower aromatics and juicy grilled peaches and pineapples intermingle with lemon pulp, lime zest and honeyed ginger. An exceptional example of the fruit-forward Rieslings from the epic 2020 vintage. Biodynamic.

The 2020 Riesling HJW Bio is sourced from the HJW Vineyard's Block Four, which contains biodynamically farmed vines that were planted in 2009. The wine was 50% aged in third- and fourth-use large-format wood (1,000 and 500-liter Hungarian barrels) for 10 months. It comes in with six grams of sugar and 12.6% alcohol. In keeping with the theme of relatively friendly 2020s, this is rather appealing right now. It handles the wood nicely so that you don't really notice. The acidity is beautifully integrated, as with the Dry Riesling, but this has a more expressive and concentrated feel to it. Depending on your preferred style, there isn't a huge qualitative difference between the two, while the price more than doubles, but this is the better wine. Part of that is because this seems to have a better chance of developing with age. As friendly as it is now, I can see this HJW Bio becoming something more. I'm not so sure I'd say the same about the regular Dry Riesling.
