Situated on the mountain slopes of Pritchard Hill, the Chappellet vineyards always yield Cabernets (Franc and Sauvignon) of intense personality. This Cabernet Franc (78%, with 16% Cabernet Sauvignon , plus Malbec, Petit Verdot and Merlot) is a rich, dark, savoury wine redolent of tobacco, worn leather, cocoa powder, sandalwood, exotic spices and the faintest hint of sage and garrigue. Though powerful, it’s also velvety, thanks to winemaker Phillip Corallo-Titus’ skill with mountain grapes.
Now entering its prime drinking window, the 2019 Cabernet Franc still boasts bushels of ripe cherries on the nose, accented by brown sugar and caramel-scented oak. Full-bodied and supple, maybe even a touch warm, the wine does finish long, with attractive cinnamon and star anise shadings.
