The first property acquired by Peter Kwok and his daughter Elaine in 1997, this estate celebrated a landmark vintage in 2015 – the first to include the limestone parcel from St-Etienne-de-Lisse that Kwok had purchased two years prior. A blend of 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc, the wine was aged for 15 months in a mixture of new (35%), second-use (35%) and third-use (30%) barrels. Gareth Birchley: Dark fruit, plums. Lovely texture. Well balanced with great fruit concentration and good length. Vincenzo Arnese: Fresh and balanced, with well-integrated tannins and a good fruit profile. A touch of barnyard. Red fruits are blending well with the gentle oak profile. Arthur Coggill: Hints of bell pepper beneath the cool blackcurrant and damson bramble notes. Understated, but promising. Gentle entry. Pure, mouthfilling prune and damson palate. Tannins are well worked and abundant but the acidity is in harmony.
Aged for 16 months in barrels, 35% new, the 2015 Haut Brisson is a blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, it opens with savory smoked meats, sauteed herbs and dusty soil scents plus touches of cedar chest and iron ore over a core of black cherries, red currants and warm plums. The medium-bodied palate is firm and crunchy with a chewy backbone, finishing with great freshness and length.
