CASTELLO DI VOLPAIA CHIANTI CLASSICO RISERVA COLTASSALA hails from the prestigious Tuscany region of Italy, known for its rich viticultural heritage. This wine exhibits a robust flavor profile characterized by dark cherry, plum, and subtle notes of spice and earthiness, balanced by well-structured tannins and a lingering finish.
This Chianti Classico Riserva pairs excellently with a variety of traditional Italian dishes. Ideal accompaniments include hearty pasta with meat sauces, grilled meats, and aged cheeses such as Parmigiano-Reggiano or Pecorino.
A real beauty, the 2017 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Coltassala (made with organic fruit) shows medium-rich textural fiber with plenty of dark fruit, cherry, spice and leather. The important thing to mention here is how light and elegantly fragrant this wine remains despite the considerable heat and dryness of the growing season. In fact, all those fruit tones emerge with terrific purity and focus, backed by acidity and integrated structure, that invite an evening-long sampling with some medium-aged pecorino.
Castello di Volpaia produces two Gran Selezione. Coltassala, is a historic 3.5 hectare single vineyard. While replanting has been ongoing since the 1980s, the Stianti family has preserved the DNA of the original Sangiovese and Mammolo vines. In 2017, this was picked on September 22nd after a much-needed rainfall refreshed the vines. It is a very intense expression and will need some time to sort itself out. The nose is meaty with coffee and grilled herb aromas taking hold. Full-bodied and richly fruited but rather angular in structure with oak notes sitting on top, this is definitely in an awkward phase.
