The 2014 Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Fonteny comprises of just one 350-liter barrel from François Frères this year, one of the domaine's smallest bottlings. It has a rich and exotic bouquet that strangely reminds me of tasting some Right Bank Saint Emilion wines at primeur! The palate is well balanced with intense red cherry and cassis fruit, a keen line of acidity, and oak supporting the finish though there is decent fruit underneath. It needs several years in bottle to shed that wood.
