Initial intense juicy fruit aromas of sour plum, sweet ripe cherry and candied citrus peel then see some laurel leaf, white pepper and a very distinctive ferrous note kick in. The palate has amazing energy; a big entry, a dense, ripe, tannic middle, and an infinitely long and grippy finish with a return of the fruit and spice aromas of the nose. Drink now for the exuberance, or put to one side for a great bottle in the future.
The 2019 Gattinara Riserva San Francesco is another imposing wine from Antoniolo. Dark-toned fruit, leather, cedar and spice open in this ample, full-bodied Gattinara. Concentrated and rich, this substantially powerful and intense wine is striking in its beauty. The 2019 is a dark, brooding Riserva that has it all. Superb.
