Deep ruby color. The nose is expressive with notes of red fruits, coffee and black pepper. Complex on the palate with aromas of plums, fruit and spices, this well-balanced wine is an elegant expression of Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon.
The 2016 Amancaya is a blend of 70% Malbec, a little higher than normal, and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon from Agrelo and Altamira from the coldest vintage on record. It fermented with neutral yeasts, and half of the volume matured in concrete vats while the other half was racked into French oak barrels, 10% to 15% of them new, for 12 months. There are some notes of leather and earth that give it a rustic twist. It has a mixture of red and black fruit and a medium-bodied palate with fine tannins but doesn't have the freshness I was expecting from a 2015. 234,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in July 2017.

Dark red with ruby tones. Aromas of cassis, black cherry, graphite, licorice, menthol and black olive reminded me of a northern Médoc wine. A bit cooler and less fruity than the 2017 Aruma Malbec, in need of another year or two to expand a bit. Good intensity here but a distinctly cool and rather streamlined wine with as much herbal character as primary fruit. The tannins are dusty but not austere, but this backward wine could use more sweetness. Bodegas Caro is a joint venture between Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite-Rothschild) and the Catena family and I can smell the Lafite barrels here. Incidentally, this wine is labeled Amancaya Gran Reserva in the domestic market.
