“The nose is dark, intense and brooding with aromas of black cherries, cardamom, sweet tobacco, espresso and subtle whiffs of perfume. The dark fruit character of the nose follows through onto an exceptionally complex, juicy palate with gentle nuances of ripe plums, violets, black olives, cloves, and licorice. The mid-palate is focused, lithe and elegant with very fine, cocoa powdery tannins. The wine is medium bodied, very balanced with an earthy, layered character, covering the entire spectrum of berry fruit - from tart red plums to rich blue and black berries. The finish is svelte, clean and dry, peppery and lingering, with hints of dried cranberry, tar, graphite and smoke.
Blend: 71% Syrah, 11% Grenache, 9% Cinsault, 8% Cabernet Sauvignon, 1% Viognier”-Winemaker Notes

The 2022 The Chocolate Block comprises Syrah (77%, which is slightly higher than usual), Grenache (9%), Cinsault (8%), Cabernet Sauvignon (5%) and Viognier (1%), with around 70% of the production estate-grown. It is whole berry fermented, matured in 95% used French oak using the "OX011 system to rotate the barrels. It has an attractive, well-defined bouquet with brambly red fruit, mocha and crushed violet scents (no aromas of dark chocolate). The medium-bodied palate has powdery tannins, very well-balanced and fresh, with a surprisingly tensile, engaging graphite-tinged finish. An exemplar of how to create a hugely popular brand whilst upholding quality.

The 2022 Chocolate Block reveals a lighter and firmer character, boasting flavors of tart cherry, mineral dust, citrus blossoms and cherry skins, with hints of herbs and peppercorns, all wrapped in subtle oak spices. The palate is subtle and reserved with a medium to full body, predominantly showcasing a red-fruited profile that leans more toward Grenache than Syrah. This intriguing blend, consisting of 77% Syrah, 9% Grenache, 8% Cinsault, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon and 1% Viognier spent 12 to 14 months in 5% new French oak. This is a huge production of 1,185,000 bottles.
