This is very linear and tight with a fine and lightly muscular structure that runs the length of the wine and goes on and on. Medium-bodied, fresh and vivid. Firm, structured, cool and long. 90% sangiovese and 10% cabernet sauvignon. Better from 2027.

A tiny percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon has been added to this Sangiovese-based wine. The Fattoria le Pupille 2021 Morellino di Scansano Riserva shows an impressive level of fruit clarity with lots of freshness and a tightly knit, medium-plus mouthfeel. This is classic Morellino executed by some of the most talented winemakers on the Tuscan Coast. You get unbelievable value with this bottle.

I have high hopes that Morellino will return to center stage performing as the lean, agile, crowd-pleasing version of Sangiovese that it is. If the comeback is successful, it will be in large part thanks to Le Pupille's work polishing this grape's natural talents.

Tomato leaf, eucalyptus and bay laurel notes mingle with plum, blackberry and iron flavors in this dense, beefy red. A beam of acidity drives the salty finish, with a firm grip of tannins. Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon. Best from 2026 through 2038. 3,750 cases made, 770 cases imported.

The 2021 Morellino di Scansano Riserva is dark and imposing. A blast of dark cherry, plum, leather, licorice, scorched earth and tobacco adds to the wine's virile personality. I would prefer to drink this somber Riserva over the coming few years.
