Azelia Barolo 2021

Restrained, if not low-key on the nose, with spicy and peppery character to the red-fruit, pomegranate and fresh floral aromas. Medium-bodied, it shows firm, youthful tannins with crisp acidity and an austere, grainy finish. Try from 2027.

Moving to the Barolo selections from Azelia, the 2021 Barolo is detailed and spicy on the nose with lifted notes of licorice, dried cherries, dried mint, and thyme. It’s a mid-weight offering with an easygoing and more weightless feel, with fine tannins and refreshing acidity. Drink over the next few years.

The 2021 Barolo is deep, succulent and layered. Dark-toned fruit, leather, spice, cedar and dried herbs build effortlessly in the glass. Floral and savory overtones play off a core of black cherry/plum fruit. All the elements are very nicely balanced. This is a fine showing from the Scavino family and a terrific wine in its peer group.
